Gastric Bypass

GENERAL BARIATRIC INFORMATION

Below is a brief run down of the two most common procedures Dr. Searles performs. For additional information please see our virtual seminar and or ask for further information when you have your appointment.

RNY GASTRIC BYPASS

In this procedure the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch (roughly the size of a hard boiled egg) and attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine.

By creating a smaller stomach pouch, a gastric bypass limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time, so you feel full sooner and stay full longer. By bypassing a portion of the small intestine it also causes your body to absorb fewer calories. As you eat less food and absorb fewer calories your body will stop storing excess calories and start using its fat supply for energy.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

If you’re looking for more information online we suggest going to www.obesityhelp.com which is a great source of information. You have the option to simply view the info and forums or you can make a profile to chat with other patients to get advice and hear about their weight loss surgery journeys.

If you prefer “old fashioned” research then there two books written by Bariatric patients: ‘The Success Habits of Weight-Loss Surgery Patients’ by Colleen M. Cook and or ‘Before & After’ by Susan Maria Leach. These books go over the good, the bad, and the ugly on Weight-loss surgery and are great to come back and reread after surgery.

WHAT'S NEXT?

If you've already started the process with us please remember to give us a call once you have completed all of your required pre-operative tests. This way we can pull your chart to review and confirm we’ve received everything. If all of the work up has been received we will put your chart on Dr. Searles desk for him to do a final review and have him confirm you are medically cleared. Once you’re medically cleared we can work with you on finding a surgery date so that we can then submit to your insurance company for a surgery authorization.
